The Environmental Impact of Recycled Glass Tile

Many glass tile manufacturers today are producing glass tile that are entirely 100% made from recycled glass material. As glass is recycled in enormous amounts, it can be obtained relatively easily to produce into an aesthetically beautiful tile!

Recycled glass tiles are made by crushing the collected glass and then mixing it with metallic oxides where it is then melted and poured into moulds to be baked. Other companies such as Bedrock Industries produce glass tiles that,"are crafted entirely from post-industrial and post-consumer glass; we add no additional oxides or colorants."

The negative that arises in the recycled glass tile industry is the energy consumed in the production of the tiles. Although energy is required for the firing process of the tiles, in comparison to other recycled tiles such as porcelain and ceramic, the energy used if far less! In fact according to Sand hill Industries, "each (glass) tile takes less than one-half of the energy to produce than ceramic tile, and less than one-fourth of the energy it takes to produce a cast-glass tile."

The Health Impact of Recycled Glass Tile

Recycled glass tiles are an excellent healthy addition to a green home renovation. Glass is naturally non-absorptive meaning that it will not hold water or stains which is why glass is commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms as mildew and bacteria cannot flourish.

As with any tile installation and indoor air quality it is vital to choose adhesives, grouts and sealers that will also protect your health. Choose products that have zero or low VOC emissions such as AFM Safecoat and Bostik
