The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

Another organization that plays an important role in the success of environmentally conscious products and services is the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). According to their web site the FSC is; " an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. " They provide "standard setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry."

The efforts of the FSC allow for businesses and consumers to make ecologically safe buying decisions to promote the environmental health of forests world wide. All products that pass the accreditation process are then granted a certified seal of approval or FSC label signifying the applicants success in achieving the high standards set by this organization.

The Forest Stewardship Council is represented in 46 counties world wide and is governed by a diverse membership including environmental and social activists, representatives of the timber and forestry trade, responsible corporations and of course the indigenous people from the communities of the many regions in which forestry takes place.

With the aid of Accreditation Services International (ASI), who works in conjunction with the FSC as, "an independent accreditation body which delivers accreditation and other relevant services to the Forest Stewardship Council, the Marine Stewardship Council and other certification schemes worldwide", environmentally conscious companies and organizations are receiving the appropriate recognition they deserve for their efforts.

So when you decided to purchase a new or recycled wood based product such as a floor or furniture, look for the FSC seal of approval and support the cause for safe forestry!
